First original TV shows for Xbox to debut in 2014

Microsoft will be debuting its first set of original television series for Xbox Live in 2014.

The Xbox lineup includes a series based on the Halo franchise being executive produced by Steven Spielberg and will be available via Xbox Live for both the 360 console and the Xbox One.

Nancy Tellem (former president of CBS Entertainment and current president of entertainment and digital media at Microsoft) told Variety:

“We’re hoping we will be able to put something up in the first quarter, at minimum second quarter.”

Xbox Live offers a potential 48 million subscriber audience for the content Tellem is producing and has the added advantage of being attached to what is often the main television screen in a household.

The original series Tellem is working on could provide a reason for consumers to pick an Xbox over a PlayStation if the content is strong enough. She also speaks of securing exclusives, creating interactive features for particular types of content and franchise building. These original series will add to existing content services on Xbox, which already include Netflix and Lovefilm.

Tellem says:

Technology and the transition that was taking place was incredibly interesting to me. It’s very exciting for me to be in this position right now and see how the business model evolves and how content evolves.”

But it’s the fact that the evolution is still in its infancy that’s causing a few headaches. Certainly in terms of explaining the proposition to the television industry.

“We’re neither [Netflix of Amazon] or we’re a little like them. It all depends. The lack of black and white and this is the template and this is what we’re following is very difficult. As we continue to do deals everyone’s going to get more comfortable.”
